Our farm has been in the Sytsma family for over a hundred years. Being in the industry, we know how the environment plays a large role in beef quality and overall livestock health.
Our cattle are housed in a covered hoop building bedded with wood shavings to keep them dry and out of the elements. They stay clean and comfortable and choose between a concrete pen and a dirt lot to roam and relax in.
The diet for our cattle during the finishing program is a mix of corn, corn silage, dried distillers grain, hay, straw, and minerals. This is a specific feed blend that meets the nutrient requirements of the cattle, increases intramuscular fat (marbling), and maximizes flavor. Each cow’s diet is a product of working closely with Walnutdale Farm’s nutritionist to not only ensure calorie needs are met, but also includes essential vitamins and minerals to support their immune system and healthy growth. They are on a free-choice feeding program and always have access to clean, fresh water. They are never fed any growth hormones or antibiotics.
We know what they're eating, so that you know what you're eating. That's our promise.
All our cattle are crossbred Angus for optimum yield and marbling. They are born and raised at Walnutdale Farms until they are ready to be brought to our farm to be finished. Walnutdale Farms prides themselves on their state-of-the-art traceability program to ensure each animal receives the best care possible. All cattle are cared for under strict animal welfare guidelines which are part of the F.A.R.M Animal Welfare Program.
Most of our cattle have an average hanging weight of 750 lbs. Depending on the cut you choose, this will yield approximately 450 lbs. of meat from a whole animal for your freezer.
We’re Steve and Laura Sytsma, owners of Mapleview Cattle Farm and Byron Center Meats, a local custom meat processor. We know firsthand how important transparency is in the food industry. That’s why we’ve decided to provide local, all-natural beef that gives customers an insider look; from our farm to your table. While doing so, we strive to be stewards of God's creation by providing food for your family in a thoughtful and sustainable way.
Tours are available by appointment. We'd enjoy showing you around our farm. Email Laura to schedule a tour!
